More rhino are coming to Imvelo’s second community rhino sanctuary in September 2024 and we couldn’t be more excited to share all the details with you.
The arrival of Thuza and Kusasa, the first community rhino back to Hwange in nearly a quarter of a century at Imvelo’s first community rhino sanctuary at Ngamo has proved successful and sparked the interest of other communities along Hwange’s southern boundary.
Three communities have now amalgamated their land adjacent to the Park boundary and allocated it to rhino conservation, creating the second community rhino sanctuary – the “Mlevu Rhino Sanctuary”. Imvelo are excited to be building on CRCI’s successes to date with the expansion of the initiative…and the arrival of two new rhinos.
As part of the establishment of the Mlevu Rhino Sanctuary, a new batch of local scouts have been recruited and trained, high-tech wildlife-proof fencing has been erected, boreholes have been drilled and equipped, a scouts’ base has been set-up (barracks, canteen, operations room) and scrub clearing has opened up even more grazing land for rhino.
We are honoured to have the expert team of ecologists at the Malilangwe Trust to champion the translocation of these magnificent animals to the newly established Mlevu Sanctuary.
Please find attached the Mlevu Sanctuary Press release to read and we invite you all to be part of this significant milestone by following the journey with us on Imvelo’s IG – @imvelosafarilodgeszim and Africa Hidden Gems IG page too – @africahiddengems.
